Rediscovering Home in Arusha: A Journey Through Nostalgia and Adventure

August 14, 2024

Recently, I was invited by the owners of Masailand Safari & Lodge for a familiarisation visit to their property in Arusha, a vibrant town nestled in the northern part of Tanzania. Masailand Safari & Lodge is located conveniently close to the Arusha Airport. Ironically, though the trip was meant to familiarise me with their lodge, the moment I arrived, everything felt familiar. The rural landscape and the warm hospitality brought back cherished memories of my own upbringing, making me feel instantly at home.

A Home Away from Home

The lodge is situated in a charming rural area, reminiscent of the place where I grew up. One of the lodge's most delightful features is its vegetable garden, where they grow fresh produce for their meals. This commitment to sustainable living and farm-to-table dining instantly resonated with me, as it mirrored the simplicity and authenticity of my childhood. Additionally, the lodge boasts an instrument pool designed for locals to gather, swim, and enjoy time with family and friends. This thoughtful amenity, created by the lodge's owners, adds a wonderful sense of community to the experience, making it feel like home away from home.

A Private Safari Adventure

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Tarangire National Park on a private safari, located just an hour and a half from Masailand. Having my own driver dedicated to finding the most elusive wildlife made the journey even more special. The pinnacle of this safari was spotting a leopard hidden in a tree. Though it was difficult to see with the naked eye, binoculars revealed its majestic presence. The excitement among the convoy of safari vehicles converging to catch a glimpse of the leopard added to the thrill of the experience.

A Day at Serval Wildlife

My visit to Serval Wildlife was another standout moment. This beautiful, open space allowed me to reconnect with my roots. The expansive, clean environment took me back to my childhood days, where wide-open spaces were a part of everyday life. Feeding and interacting with the animals also brought back cherished memories, and the friendly staff made the experience truly unforgettable.

Embracing Maasai Culture

The most touching part of my visit was my interaction with the Maasai people within the Serval Wildlife area. Being dressed in traditional Maasai attire, complete with beads, felt incredibly special, almost like a ceremonial acceptance. The Maasai people were warm and welcoming, teaching me traditional dances and sharing their vibrant culture with genuine hospitality. As someone who cherishes African traditions, this experience was particularly meaningful.

Final Reflections

Arusha offered me more than just a trip; it provided a nostalgic journey back to my roots. From the serene Masailand Safari & Lodge and its community-centric amenities to the exhilarating safari and the enriching cultural encounters with the Maasai, every moment was filled with a sense of belonging and adventure.

For anyone looking to experience the warmth of rural life, the thrill of wildlife, and the richness of African culture, Arusha is a destination that promises unforgettable memories.

Victoria Falls is one of those jaw-dropping natural wonders that truly lives up to the hype. But the most common question: Which side is better, Zambia or Zimbabwe? On my most recent trip, I decided to do what any curious traveller would—I checked out both sides, went on a helicopter ride, took a jet boat to the base of the falls, and even hopped on a sunrise tram. Let’s just say, I embarked on a mission to see the falls from every possible angle, and boy, did I get wet!

So, let me set the scene. Picture me, standing in the heart of Livingstone, Zambia, at Mukuni Big 5 Safaris, about to cross off one of the biggest items on my bucket list—walking with lions. If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd have the guts to be in the presence of lions, let alone touch one, I'd have laughed nervously and said, "Yeah, right!"
